Iris + Michael’s | Wedding at Parkland Country Club

Iris + Michael

What was your most memorable moment on your wedding day?

The entire day was so memorable.  Waking up to a sunny and beautiful morning, getting ready with all my bridesmaids, my mom and sister helping me get dressed, going down the stairs of our house, the look on my father’s face when he saw me for the first time, the car ride with my dad to the church, and finally walking down the aisle and seeing Mike’s happy face as he saw me for the first time.  I would have to say that the most meaningful and memorable was when we went to see Mike’s mom at the hospital. Two days before our wedding she fell and hurt herself and had to have emergency surgery the day before our wedding and was not able to attend.  Right after the ceremony, Mike’s dad drove us to the hospital so we could surprise her.  We will never forget her face, as well as the doctors and nurses, when she saw me in my wedding gown and Mike in his tuxedo.  We love our mother and new mother-in-law and wanted to hopefully cheer her up.  We felt so bad for her, as she has been such an enormous part of our lives.   When she is better, we will do something to give her and Mike their special moment.   We definitely won’t forget the amount of rain that came down after we said I DO, and having all of our friends and family with us on one the most special days of our lives, as well as and our amazing photographers.

Please share with us the story behind your rosary? I am half Mexican and half Cuban and I wanted to incorporate some of our traditions in our religious ceremony.  I asked my beautiful cousin Crystal who was coming to our wedding from Los Angeles California to find me a lasso for Mike and I to use on our wedding day. In the catholic Mexican culture it is tradition to use the wedding lasso rosary during the religious ceremony. The Lasso is a large rosary and is placed around the bride and groom as a symbol of unity. The lasso was placed on both Mike and I during our ceremony by my sister and maid of honor Sharon and my best friend and Matron of honor Ingrid before receiving our blessing. In our culture when the lasso is placed on us it is a symbol of unifying as us a couple together in marriage for our entire lives and the use of the rosary beads symbolizes that we are forever bound together in unity by God. We are to share the responsibility of marriage and raising a family. The figure eight also represents the mathematical symbol for infinity – no beginning and no end. The number eight in the Bible is also the number of new beginnings.

Did you exchange any gifts with Mike?

The morning of our ceremony, I sent Mike a bag filled with goodies.  In the bag were custom made Mickey and Minnie “just got married” t-shirts,  as well as Mickey and Minnie Mouse Bride and Groom coozies to use on our mini honeymoon to Disney World. I also gave him a beautiful watch and a hand written card as a wedding day present so that he wouldn’t be late to our wedding.  Mike sent me a beautiful hand written card as well, and a beautiful necklace with a gold crucifix.

I thought your wishing hearts were such a cute addition. What was the inspiration behind them?

I originally wanted to use one of our engagement pictures on a canvas for our guests to sign but once I received the canvas I thought it was so pretty I decided to keep it and use it in or bedroom wall instead. I then came across the idea of using the wooden hearts from a pin on Pinterest as I thought that it’s so original and very different from what I have see in the past. I placed all of the hearts in a large frame and hung it in one of the hallways of our house after our wedding.

What inspired your vision for your wedding day?

I always envisioned our wedding day to be timeless, elegant, classic, fun, and memorable.  We wanted people to be comfortable and relaxed, and not be attending a typical wedding.  Once we chose our venue at Parkland Golf and Country Club because of with all of its natural greens, cobblestones, beautiful tall cypress trees, water fountains, and a soft rustic feel, everything else fell into place. Our wonderful florist also helped with my vision with her beautiful flower arrangements in which she was able to incorporate using my favorite flower the White Iris. She also used a lot of greens, other beautiful and delicate flowers, and used many candles to soften up and create a romantic and elegant setting both at the church and our reception.  We chose soft pastel colors such as gold ivory, blush, soft pink, and lilac. As for the decorations, I always say less is more so we tried to keep the decorations and flowers very simple and not over do it. We used corks for our guest place cards, we personalized our table numbers by incorporating special people and moments as a couple,  and as party favors we had an open photo booth.   Coming from a musical family, it was important to us that we had a really good band and DJ so that we can all dance the night away and celebrate with everyone.

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?

I would definitely say to be sure to hire the right team so that your day doesn’t skip a beat even if something happens last minute – like a family emergency or bad weather. We were fortunate enough to have very professional vendors who worked very well together, as well as made sure that the day was perfect.  I didn’t hire a wedding planner so it was extremely important that everyone we hired as vendors had really good reviews and recommendations. I will also say to make sure that you try on your dress before your wedding, and know how to bustle the dress, hire a professional and amazing photographer and videographers to capture your day to the fullest as you only get one shot, and remember to take a few days before going on your honeymoon especially if going overseas or taking a longer honeymoon.
